Our Nursing with Registered Nurse (Mental Health) course will enable you to develop the core skills, knowledge, attitudes and behaviours that are essential when you’re caring for people with complex mental health needs.
You’ll gain the skills required to practice mental health nursing effectively and professionally in a variety of health and social care settings, with an emphasis on compassion, communication and dignity in care.
Along the way you’ll develop an appreciation of the importance of comprehensive person-centred assessment, care planning, care delivery, and inter-professional working.
You’ll explore how mental health services are organised and delivered while gaining vital work experience. Half your time will be spent working within a professional practice, where you’ll develop a strong portfolio of clinical and interpersonal skills, preparing you for the next stage of your career as someone who’s able to provide safe and effective interventions to people requiring mental health care.
Please note, nursing programmes leading to registration are not available to international students.

What you'll do
- Our course is made up of 50% practice and 50% theory and you’ll be allocated to one of several NHS Trusts within our region as your base.
- Your clinical placements will be interspersed throughout your two years and you will be supervised, assessed and supported by relevant health care professionals. You’ll work alongside practice supervisors and be expected to work a range of different shift patterns across a 24 hour, seven day period.
- You’ll gain a dual academic and professional qualification on completion of this programme.

On this module you will develop fundamental skills, behaviours and expectations required to become a Registered Nurse (Adult/Mental Health). You will meet the Professional accrediting body requirements (Nursing & Midwifery Council) through reflection, discussion/debate & critical decision making relating to concepts and/or contemporary principles.

This module provides you with the opportunity to develop nursing skills, values, and practice within the real-world setting. You will meet the standards of proficiency and associated skills for Part 2 of the programme and those expected of the future nurse (NMC, 2018).

This module will help you understand how the role of the mental health nurse supports people to recover from mental illness and co-morbid health issues. The module will equip you with the underpinning knowledge of a range of interventions and approaches which they can use in caring for people with mental health problems.

Senior Lecturer
We have close links with healthcare providers across central Lancashire, including NHS Trusts across Preston and Fylde Coast, Fleetwood and Blackpool, Blackburn, Burnley, Wigan, Chorley, Southport and Ormskirk.
We can also find a placement for you with private healthcare providers and independent and voluntary sector organisations. These learning environments will provide you with a unique insight into how mental health care is managed in all settings, not just within the NHS. Our clinical placement providers are audited according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council professional regulatory requirements for learning and teaching in clinical practice. Each area has a dedicated member of academic staff attached to the placement, so that you can access support and advice. Our academic staff work in close contact with the NHS Trust Practice Education Facilitators.
Future careers
Our well-established nursing programmes produce highly employable graduates. An impressive 100% of our mental health nursing undergraduates have gone onto employment or further study within six months (HESA 2018).
Our Nursing programme prepares you for a future career as a registered mental health nurse who’s equipped with the skills, knowledge and compassion required to deliver outstanding care to individuals experiencing acute and complex mental health issues.
You’ll also have the confidence to implement best practice and bring about positive changes in the delivery of mental health care within your workplace.
As a registered nurse you’ll have the option of widening your career path. Some of these options include a wide variety of clinical specialisms, advanced practitioner / therapist, non-medical prescriber, practice / service development, senior management, educator: preceptor / supervisor / lecturer, researcher and consultancy roles
Please note: Students who have successful undertaken the Nursing Associate programme will join the programme as part-time students in Year 2 and a full-time student in Year 3.

During your time with us you’ll spend around half your time at the University, where you’ll engage in a range of directed and self-directed study as an active learner. While on campus you’ll attend a combination of keynote lectures, discussions, seminars and clinical skills sessions, as well as engaging in debates and independent study.
You’ll spend the other half of your time working on practice placements within professional healthcare environments, including the National Health Service. Part of the placement experience is to help you to understand how modern nursing care is delivered to people experiencing a range of needs in various settings. You’ll also work closely alongside other professionals to enable you to gain a good understanding of how different professionals work together to deliver quality care for people.
You’ll have the opportunity to engage in skills development and simulated practice within our skills and simulation environments. This will allow you to practice the skills that you will be expected to reach proficiency in, as well as identifying where you need to focus your personal and professional development plans.
Our assessment strategy is designed to determine that you have met the necessary standards as set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Assignments are likely to include written reports, examinations and story boards. Throughout your placements you will also be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, behaviour and conduct that the public expects from nurses in all health and social care settings.
The dual academic and professional qualification gained from completing this course is:
- Academic: MSc Pre- Registration Nursing (180 credits at Level 7)
- Professional: Registered Nurse (Mental Health) – registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
