- strawberries
- raspberries
- watermelon
- red grapes
- white peaches
- blueberries
- blackberries
- lemon juice or lime juice
- mint leaves (optional)
Watermelon is a staple at summer barbecues so it’s a must for a patriotic fruit salad recipe. It’s RED, ripe and delicious. Plus, it adds juices that pair well with the fresh berries. Also, add a touch of lemon juice to give this fruit salad a nice citrus touch.
I’ve added a few sprinkles of chopped fresh mint to this recipe but, feel free to omit if you wish.
Star Cookie Cutters
Use a smallstar-shaped cookie cutterto cut thewatermelon slicesor makewhite starswithwhite fruitwhich is what I did. I used white peaches to make the stars for this recipe.
This adds a nice patriotic touch if you’ve got a little extra time. Alternatively, you can make stars out of the watermelon much easier.
How to MakeWhite Stars
As I’ve mentioned above, you can usewhite melon, white peaches, anjou pears to makewhite starsfor your patriotic fruit salad.
For white peaches or anjou pears: Stand them up straight and cut them on the side to make long slices. It may be easier to cut the peach in half and remove the pit, so you don’t cut into it. Use asmall star cookie cutterfor this.
Summary Instructions
*The printable, full recipe is in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Rinse all fruits and mint thoroughly. Remove any stems from strawberries or seeds from watermelon as necessary.
- Cut the watermelon into uniform bite-sized pieces. It will look more visually appealing thandifferent sizes. Cut strawberries into slices.
- Add to large Bowl: watermelon pieces, red grapes, blueberries, black raspberries (reserve some blackberries to place on top), and strawberries.
- Then, chop the mint and add to the bowl.
- Next, squeeze two tablespoons of freshlemon juiceand add it to the bowl.
- Then, using a big spoon, stir it. Garnish it with extra mint leaves and put remaining black berries on top.
Red, White and Blue Layering
Alternatively, you can layer the red, white andblue fruitsto create a striking display of colors reminiscent of theAmerican flag.
In a big clear glass or plastic bowl, begin by layering thered fruitsat the bottom of a large serving bowl or platter, followed by the white fruits, and finally, theblue fruitson top.
This may be a good option if you don’t have time to cut out white stars. Plus, if you’re having trouble finding white fruit, honeydew melon will work with a layered salad because it won’t be as obvious that it’s greenish when it’s in the bowl.
Substitutions and Additions
- Add chopped fresh basil instead of mint.
- If lemon isn’t your thing, you can use 2 tablespoons of freshlime juiceor 1/4 cup of pineapple juice ororange juice.
- Sprinkle toasted coconut flakes over the top of the fruit salad for added flavor and texture.
Add 1-2 tablespoons of honey or agave syrup to the lemon or lime juice to make a citrus dressing for an added burst of flavor.
